Ahead of Africa Cup of Nations, new support for United Against Malaria in Côte d’Ivoire
As the Africa Cup of Nations kicks off this weekend in South Africa, United Against Malaria partners in Côte d’Ivoire met yesterday to celebrate new commitments from public and private sector leaders in the fight against malaria.
Under the leadership of UNICEF, bookseller Librairie de France, telecoms provider MTN, Coalition des Entreprises de Côte d’Ivoire (CECI), the African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) and Johns Hopkins University, the Ivoirian partnership has mobilized incredible support since its beginnings in 2009. A ceremony in Abidjan yesterday boasted the presence of three ministers, from the Ministry of Communication, Ministry of Health (pictured), and Ministry of Labor and Social Affaires, as well as a representative of President Alassane Ouattara. The Ivorian UAM campaign represents an incredibly close collaboration with the National Malaria Control Program (NMCP).
Initially launched before the 2010 FIFA World Cup, UAM leverages the global popularity of football to raise awareness and resources for malaria control, both in the public sector and the private sector. At yesterday’s ceremony, four influential companies in Cote d’Ivoire announced their support—the Compagnie Ivoirienne d’Electricité (CIE), Banque Internationale pour le Commerce et l’Industrie de la Côte d’Ivoire (BICICI), parastatal insurance company CNPS, and Petro-Côte d’Ivoire, one of the country’s leading oil refineries.

Thursday’s event marks just one of many UAM activities to take place throughout Africa from now to the end of the tournament on Feb. 10. As for Côte d’Ivoire’s national football team, the Elephants will challenge Togo in the seventh match of the tournament on January 22.
