Tanzania

The United Republic of Tanzania has a population of 43 million people, most of whom are at risk of malaria. While endemicity and risk of transmission vary between regions, approximately 16-18 million cases of malaria occur annually and account for over 40% of all outpatient attendees nationwide, resulting in 60-80,000 deaths each year. Malaria also consumes an estimated 3.4% of national resources per year (GDP) making malaria a major contributor to the continuing cycle of poverty and stifled economic performance in Tanzania. Since 2008, Voices in Tanzania was able to bring a wide range of partners to malaria control, including high ranking government officials (such as the Prime Minister, the Minister of Labor and Youth Development and the Permanent Secretary from the Ministry of Tourism), football players and officials, companies and industry associations. The Tanzania Football Federation president, CECAFA chairman, and CAF executive committee member Leodegar Tenga publicly promised to support the United Against Malaria until malaria is eradicated.
