Mozambique MapMore than 5 million cases of malaria were reported in Mozambique in 2005, and at least 3,569 of those people later died from the disease. Nationwide, 60% of children admitted to the hospital because of malaria, and 20% of childhood deaths in Mozambique are from malaria. The disease can be found almost everywhere in Mozambique.

Funded by the Voices Project, the Malaria Consortium leads the effort in Mozambique, where work is underway to develop a cohesive partnership among civil society, private sector, media advocacy specialists, and decision-makers to influence political support and commitment, and mobilize resources for malaria.

Activities to Date

  • Malaria resource center established
  • Advocacy coalition launched
  • Establishment of a Malaria Coalition Secretariat
  • Innovation Award
  • Identification and dissemination of best practices and lessons learned.
  • Identification of core group of malaria champions and training of stakeholders and champions

Upcoming Activities

  • Increase Portuguese language documents to 30% of the total documents
  • Evaluation of working groups impact on improving coordination and communication between partners.
  • Develop a newsletter with contribution from different partners on malaria advocacy activities, events and issues
  • Facilitate exploratory visits/missions from international bodies in order to promote malaria control in Mozambique
  • Organize politician and media tours at least twice a year
