Ghana
Ghana has experienced great improvement in the delivery of its malaria control programs in the past four years (2006-2010). Estimated malaria cases in 2006 of 8.3 million were reduced to 3.2 million in 2008, ITN ownership increased from 4.8% household coverage in 2003 to 37.5% in 2008, and ACT use in treating malaria among children under 5 grew quickly to 24.8% in 2008. Since 2001, the country has prevented 28,000 deaths through scaling up key interventions of ITN distribution and promotion of use, IRS in targeted districts, IPT in pregnancy during ANC and adoption of ACT for prompt and effective treatment. Nevertheless, Ghana is challenged to maintain the gains it has made in malaria control as a result of budget shortfalls since 2008.
In Ghana, the Ghana Football Association adopted malaria as a core social issue and private sector partners have implemented at least one Malaria Safe pillar activity. Through the UAM campaign, football players of the national team and all league clubs became popular spokespeople for LLIN and ACT use. Various private sector partners have already championed malaria control for Voices campaigns, such as the CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, the President of the Ghana Association of Industries, and the President of the Ghana Football Association.
